Discussion of the encoding of the names of non-human creatures, things, and events using name
For categories of names which are not covered by any of the TEI’s special-purpose name elements (placeName, persName, orgName, etc.), we recommend using the name element. If you want to designate specific categories of names (for instance, events, structures, animals, and so forth) you can use the type attribute of name to capture this information, but think beforehand about how this information will be used: are the categories clear and non-overlapping? Will you use the information for retrieval or analysis?
Some categories of names which might be encoded with name:
- philosophical or cultural concepts and schools: Romanticism, the Oversoul, Dadaism
- religious movements and their members: Unitarianism, a Puritan
- events and holidays: the Battle of Waterloo, the Civil War, Michaelmas, Easter
- objects, vehicles: Excalibur, the Lusitania, the Shroud of Turin
- animals and mythical beasts: Secretariat, Pegasus, Cerberus
- structures: the Bodleian Library, the Great Pyramid, Stonehenge
