The TEI provides several different mechanisms for transcribing your text and representing the layout of the page. facsimile allows you to show the layout without transcribing any text. This is often used in conjunction with text which provides an idealized transcription of the text (or the logical text), that corresponds with facsimile This section includes TEI elements, like divp, lg, or ab in order to say something about structure or reading order.

The sourceDoc element allows you to transcribe the documentary text—that is, provide a transcription of the text that does not assert anything about the meaning of the layout. This section also allows you to link to page images, as the facsimile element does.
