Let’s take a look at the TEI Guidelines

The TEI Guidelines is its own constraint system—a grammar and vocabulary for an encoding language. If you click on the link, you can see what the Guidelines look like. When we encounter the Guidelines as encoders, this is what we see: a big list of elements (vocabulary we can use in describing documents) with definitions of these elements that tell us how they should be used.

However, if we look closely, we can see that there is some additional information here as well. This information (like the module and class information) is useful for customization, and it’s what we will elucidate in the following slides.
