Suggested Assignments and Activities

We offer here some ideas for assignments that engage students with issues of historicity, gender, editorial practice, gender, and language. Some of these take advantage of the features of the Women Writers Online and Women Writers in Review interfaces, but most could be applied to any set of texts. We welcome contributions—if you have an assignment using WWO or Women Writers in Review, please let us know and we will happily include it.

Collaborative annotation: In this group project, students create annotations for a selected set of texts. Read more

Collaborative modernization: In this group project, students select and modernize an early-spelling text, then compare the resulting text with the original. Read more

Tag investigation: In this project, developed by Jason M. Payton of Sam Houston State University, students explore and evaluate the tags and texts in Women Writers in Review. Read more.

Word history: In this project, students choose one or more significant words and examine how their usage and context has changed over time. Read more
