Mean and deviation of selected features in Women Writers Online
The following graphic visualizes selected textual features for each text in Women Writers Online according to their deviation from the mean across all texts. The features compared are length (number of printed pages), quotations from other sources, places named, footnotes and marginal notes, and bibliographic citations of other works.
This interactive visualization shows the Women Writers Online collection at a glance. The color of each box indicates how for a given text varies from the average text for a given criteria. For instance, we can quickly tell that Charlotte Smith's The Old Manor House, a novel, is much longer than the typical text in the WWO collection. Similarly, we can see that Hannah Adams' A History of New England names more places per page than most of our texts. Hover the cursor over a given box to see the data for that text.
